The Bubbly Hostess
Pizzelle Cookies, An Italian Christmas Tradition
Written by Heather Sneed
In December of 2012, I wrote a post on my blog at www.bubblyhostess.com about Pizzelle Cookies, how my dad would make them every year, and how I was super excited about my own CucinaPro Pizzelle Maker that I purchased from my cousin Dino earlier that year at Valente’s Deli Bakery & Italian Market in Westminster, CO. I also said that I was excited about starting an annual tradition in my home to continue the pizzelle making each year with my own family.
Well, that didn’t happen in 2013, but it’s OK, I had other areas of my life that required focus!
In 2014, the tradition started again. I made just 8 batches and happily shared them with close friends and neighbors as well as a couple of colleagues who live nearby. Traditional pizzelles are made with anise, but I’m the only member of my immediate family who enjoys those, so I started with vanilla.
Over the years the number of batches has grown – I think I’m up to about 20 now – that’s nothing compared to many other members of my family, however! I have also made chocolate as well as some half chocolate / half vanilla ones, my cousin Matt gave me that really cool idea! A little bit more labor intensive, but worth it!
My dad used to make them every year – lots of them. He always made them at the kitchen counter with a dish towel draped over his shoulder. I do the same as there is something special about the dish towel over the shoulder that makes the cookies that much more special for me. My brother, along with many other family members have kept up this tradition that holds strong within my large Italian family.
What holiday traditions do you have with your family or with your friends and neighbors in Seville? I hope you’ll share pictures and stories on my Facebook page or email them to firstname.lastname@example.org for me to share.
Wishing you all a very happy holiday season and all of the best in 2019!
